The Tier 1 Network Analyst is the entry point for monitoring, maintaining, and ensuring the uptime, security, and performance of the organization's network infrastructure. This person handles first-level alerts/incidents, basic troubleshooting involving routing, switches, firewalls, access points, and assists with F5 and Palo Alto devices, while escalating more complex issues to higher-tier network engineering.
Key Responsibilities
Monitor network devices and services (firewalls, routers, switches, access points, load balancers etc.) using network monitoring tools and dashboards.
Respond to events/alerts—assess severity, diagnose, and either resolve or escalate with appropriate diagnostics.
Handle basic configuration and troubleshooting:
• Verify and restore routing (static and dynamic) connectivity (e.g., OSPF, BGP)
• Check firewall rules (e.g. via Palo Alto NGFW) for obvious misconfigurations
• Manage access point issues: wireless connectivity, basic configuration or rebooting wireless Client
• Address simple F5 load balancer issues (e.g. pool member down, health check) under guidance.
Escalate incidents with full detail: what's failing, logs captured, what was tried, impact, etc.
Use ticketing systems to document all work: time, resolution steps, escalation, etc.
Assist higher-tiers in implementing changes or patches following documented change management processes.
Maintain and update network and device documentation (network diagrams, firewall rule catalogs, inventory of Client, F5 configurations, etc.).
Participate in scheduled maintenance windows, change requests, and possibly on-call or shift rotations if required.
Technical Skills / Knowledge
Strong foundation in TCP/IP networking, OSI model, subnetting, VLANs.
Experience with routing protocols (at least static routing; familiarity with dynamic routing such as OSPF and/or BGP).
Knowledge of firewall principles; ability to read and understand Palo Alto firewall rules, possible Panorama, NAT, zones, etc.
Familiarity with load balancing; basic functions of F5 (e.g. pool monitoring, virtual IPs).
Experience with wireless networking: deployment/configuration of access points, troubleshooting signal/coverage/connectivity issues.
Competence with switches (layer 2 / layer 3 basic switching) and routers.
Comfortable working with diagnostics: ping, traceroute, log review, simple packet capture if needed.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field, or equivalent work experience.
Ideally 1-3 years in network support, help desk with network exposure, or similar roles.
Certifications / Preferred Training
Certifications such as CompTIA Network+, CCNA are a plus.
Some exposure or training with Palo Alto Networks (PCNSA / basic Palo Alto firewall admin) is desirable.
Any F5 training or hands-on experience with load balancers is a plus.
