Protection & Control Engineer – Hydro & Dams
Position Summary
WSP is seeking a Protection & Control Engineer – Hydro & Dams to join our multidisciplinary team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, analysis, implementation, and commissioning of protection and control systems for hydroelectric, dam, and water resources infrastructure projects.
The ideal candidate will have 6 to 9 years of experience in electrical engineering, particularly in protection and control systems for hydroelectric generation, substations, transmission systems, and major infrastructure projects. Due to the global nature of our projects, advanced English and French proficiency is required.
Key Responsibilities

Design protection and control systems for hydroelectric facilities, dams, substations, switchyards, and related electrical infrastructure.
Develop protection philosophies, relay settings, protection schemes, and control strategies.
Prepare engineering studies, technical specifications, single-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, and control schematics.
Perform short-circuit, protection coordination, load flow, and arc flash studies.
Support integration with SCADA, automation, and monitoring systems.
Participate in FAT, SAT, commissioning, testing, and energization activities.
Review vendor documentation and provide technical guidance on protection and control equipment.
Support dam safety initiatives and hydropower modernization projects.
Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams including civil, structural, mechanical, hydrotechnical, instrumentation, and automation specialists.
Prepare technical reports, calculations, and project deliverables.
Support project planning, budgeting, scheduling, proposal development, and risk management.
Provide technical support during construction and commissioning.
Communicate effectively with clients, project teams, and stakeholders in English and French.

Qualifications & Experience
Education

Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, or a related discipline.
Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or Energy Systems is considered an asset.
Professional Engineer (P.Eng. or equivalent) designation is preferred.

Experience

6 to 9 years of experience in Protection & Control Engineering.
Experience in hydroelectric facilities, dams, substations, transmission systems, power generation, or major infrastructure projects.
Experience in detailed engineering, commissioning, and operation of protection and control systems.

Technical Skills

Strong knowledge of power system protection and control principles.
Experience with protective relays (SEL, GE, Siemens, ABB/Hitachi Energy, Schneider Electric, or equivalent).
Knowledge of SCADA, HMI, automation, and communication systems.
Familiarity with IEC, IEEE, CSA, NEC, NERC, and related standards.
Proficiency with ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, PSCAD, DigSILENT PowerFactory, or similar software.
Ability to develop and review electrical drawings, schematics, and specifications.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and engineering documentation tools.

Language Requirements

Advanced English proficiency (written and verbal) – Mandatory.
Advanced French proficiency (written and verbal) – Mandatory.
Ability to prepare technical reports and communicate effectively in multicultural environments.
